NAVIGATION

Did you know that animals such as birds and frogs have an internal magnetic compass that lets them sense direction? We humans have no such luck. And so, for us to determine direction we must learn to use other devices like maps and compasses, as well as our intellect, to navigate the wilderness.

Map & CompassMap & Compass is a 1 day hands on learning experience that combines technical instruction with guided practical time in the field.

Your adventure begins with the basics of orienteering; compass use and map reading, and also touches on advanced wilderness navigation; triangulation (determining your location when lost in the wilderness) and how to navigate in dense forest or around obstacles such as lakes or valleys.

You’ll also learn about declination, contour lines on a topographical map, hand rails, aiming off, and more. All are important techniques to be aware of when spending time in wilderness settings.

In an ideal world we would never get lost. Having a working knowledge of map and compass may prove an important part of keeping safe and finding your way home.
